Building a Simple Web Page With Bootstrap

Lets get started with Bootstrap by writing our first web page.

  • first we need all of the code necessary to apply styles to your page elements. This includes a number of different files.
  • We can obtain this by a number of different methods outlined on their website.
  • The easiest and quickest method is to link to the files in our document <head> from their CDN.
<link rel="stylesheet" href="https://maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/4.0.0/css/bootstrap.min.css" integrity="sha384-Gn5384xqQ1aoWXA+058RXPxPg6fy4IWvTNh0E263XmFcJlSAwiGgFAW/dAiS6JXm" crossorigin="anonymous">
<script src="https://maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/4.0.0/js/bootstrap.min.js" integrity="sha384-JZR6Spejh4U02d8jOt6vLEHfe/JQGiRRSQQxSfFWpi1MquVdAyjUar5+76PVCmYl" crossorigin="anonymous"></script>

<script src="https://code.jquery.com/jquery-3.2.1.slim.min.js" integrity="sha384-KJ3o2DKtIkvYIK3UENzmM7KCkRr/rE9/Qpg6aAZGJwFDMVNA/GpGFF93hXpG5KkN" crossorigin="anonymous"></script>
<script src="https://cdnjs.cloudflare.com/ajax/libs/popper.js/1.12.9/umd/popper.min.js" integrity="sha384-ApNbgh9B+Y1QKtv3Rn7W3mgPxhU9K/ScQsAP7hUibX39j7fakFPskvXusvfa0b4Q" crossorigin="anonymous"></script>

The following can be used as a starter template for your first Bootstrap Website! More documentation (and anything you need to know about Bootstrap) can be found at:

Advanced Navs in Bootstrap

  • The following markup may seem a bit complicated, however there are fairly simple classes and styles being applied here. Lets break this down
<nav class="navbar navbar-expand-lg navbar-light bg-light">
  <a class="navbar-brand" href="#">Navbar</a>
  <button class="navbar-toggler" type="button" data-toggle="collapse" data-target="#navbarNavDropdown" aria-controls="navbarNavDropdown" aria-expanded="false" aria-label="Toggle navigation">
    <span class="navbar-toggler-icon"></span>
  </button>
  <div class="collapse navbar-collapse" id="navbarNavDropdown">
    <ul class="navbar-nav">
      <li class="nav-item active">
        <a class="nav-link" href="#">Home <span class="sr-only">(current)</span></a>
      </li>
      <li class="nav-item">
        <a class="nav-link" href="#">Features</a>
      </li>
      <li class="nav-item">
        <a class="nav-link" href="#">Pricing</a>
      </li>
      <li class="nav-item dropdown">
        <a class="nav-link dropdown-toggle" href="#" id="navbarDropdownMenuLink" data-toggle="dropdown" aria-haspopup="true" aria-expanded="false">
          Dropdown link
        </a>
        <div class="dropdown-menu" aria-labelledby="navbarDropdownMenuLink">
          <a class="dropdown-item" href="#">Action</a>
          <a class="dropdown-item" href="#">Another action</a>
          <a class="dropdown-item" href="#">Something else here</a>
        </div>
      </li>
    </ul>
  </div>
</nav>
  • In the above example, you will first see the wrapper element <nav>, with the classes 'navbar-expand-lg', and navbar-light. This tells the navbar to be full width, and have a light grey background.

  • Next you can see the button with the class navbar-toggler. This is hidden on desktop, but allows the navigation to easily switch to a mobile-friendly hamburger navigation at a specified break point, or screen size. When the breakpoint is hit, the desktop navigation is hidden, the button is revealed, and the navigation turns into a dropdown that can be toggled.

  • There is native background JS that controls mobile/desktop navigation switching, so you do not need to write custom code to make this functionality occur.

  • The <li class="nav-item dropdown"> element is a dropdown, allowing you to easily add a secondary dropdown navigation to your individual nav links.

  • Navigations get much more in depth with various classes, controls, and styles. The above code is enough to get started with a simple and elegant navbar on your Bootstrap website. For more information, visit: https://getbootstrap.com/docs/4.0/components/navbar/
